Light pollution refers to the degradation of the nocturnal environment. It is created by
artificial lights, which hugely affect ecosystems (both flora and fauna) and human
health due to artificial night lighting. This phenomenon has grown during the
past 50 years: cities’ hustle and bustle, valorization of heritage sites has caused
over consumption of energy and higher taxes for the community.
For 3 years now, the day of the night campaign has focused on raising awareness around light pollution, protecting nocturnal biodiversity and our starry sky.
The 2011 edition is coordinated by “Agir pour l’environnement”, a non-profit organization gathering 20 partners which include environmental protection agencies and popular education NGO’s, local collectivities, natural space administrators along with regional management project structures. Discover your regional and local programs : nocturnal walks, stargazing outdoor excursions and turning off the lights to rediscover the night.
