In France the quantity of salt spread each year varies between 750 000 and 1 650 000 tons. Salting is of no use when temperatures are below -8/-9°C. Therefore it is important to implement alternatives to snow clearance by salt because of its consequences on soils and plants, water and aquatic life, animals and material goods. Some towns are now testing those alternatives to limit these impacts.

The local council, the lift services and the tourist information office have set-up an internal transport scheme for carpooling. Free, or at low fees, shuttles take local employees and seasonal workers to the resort. These shuttles filled to more than 50% of their capacity, will take the seasonal workers from home to their workplace and back, all schedules adapted to their working hours.
